Tonight I finally got out to take the boy's 6 yr pictures. It started out a little rough but in the end we had a great time. It was just him & me & we had lots of fun playing in the sand. It was hard to narrow it down to just one to post but I chose this one bc it really shows his personality.
I love you, buddy! I can't believe you are 6!

Today we took my parents to a tourist street in Naha called Kokousai. It was actually the first time we had been too so it was fun to walk around & see all the shops. I think these pig heads are outside of a restaurant. The Okinawans are known for loving their pigs & they literally use & eat every part!

Today we had the boy's first kid birthday party. In the past, we've always had big family parties so this was the first time I had to prepare for lots of kids! Even tho it was chilly the kids had a blast in the bouncy castle. Who doesn't love to bounce?

Happy Birthday my gorgeous birthday boy, today you are 6! Our tradition here is the birthday waffle. Love that morning hair too.

To celebrate the boy's birthday we took him to a place called Okinawa World. It was a full day excursion but the highlight was when he got to take his picture w the boa!

The husband got up early & made the kids blueberry & white choc chip waffles for breakfast! What a guy! When I came in the kitchen this is what I saw: the boy had gone thru & eaten only the blueberries & choc chips. This is where you either say, Ah kids, gotta love 'em or What a turd.

Happy hina-matsura! March 3 is Japanese Girl's Day. The boy made this at school to help celebrate.

joy of LOVE 25: when you love them the most

I went the whole day without taking a single picture until 7pm. I actually started to get a little panicky abt how I was going to complete this prompt & then I remembered my notes. While waiting for dinner the boy made 4 little notes, one for each of us, then he put each note in our rooms. They all say the same thing: "I love you ___." It's these little unsolicited acts of kindness that reassure me I'm not a terrible mom, he isn't a wild & uncaring boy & that I should probably relax a little more.
And don't mind that this picture was taken in my very dark room & that my unfolded clothes are on my dresser. :)

joy of LOVE 17: staying in

When I first saw this prompt I thought - ah, great. During the week, when the bigs are home from school, I try to 'stay in' as little as possible. After school we usually head straight to the park so I didn't think I'd be able to follow the prompt. And then - it rained. So we did stay in. And the kids got creative w their art kit & I got to watch a whole half hour of Oprah.

joy of LOVE 13: routine

Our Sunday routine here is pretty much round up the loose ends of the weekend bf the week start. One of those things included making 20 little Valentine's for the boy's classmates. Of course I waited till the very last day to try & buy some store bought cards. I knew I was asking for trouble. I've lived on this island long enough to know if you snooze, you loose. Thank God we were able to grab the last package of construction paper otherwise these might have been made out of coffee filters & printer paper.

joy of LOVE 12: Eyes

Looking cheesy at me while I try & get a shot of those eyes. His hair is starting to hang down in his face & bother him. I may get him a trim but I like it kinda shaggy. :)

joy of LOVE 09: passions or hobbies

The boy loves to 'collect' things. He has a backpack full of coral, pockets full of rocks & sticks. He hangs on to anything he deems worthy of a collection. There isn't a high standard. Every time we go to the park (almost daily) he adds to what he calls his nature collection. Basically anything outside can go into this collection. Leaves, sticks, pine cones, flowers, branches... you get the picture. My only rule is, it (mostly) can't come in the house. :)

joy of LOVE 06: who THEY love

This probably sounds corny, or untrue(!) but frankly, they love each other. Yes, the bigs fight all the time. All the time. But they also help each other out. The girl gives unsolicited hugs to the boy & proclaims she will one day marry him. He picks up her toys or draws her a picture just to make her happy. The one absolute thing the bigs can agree on is how much they love the baby. They adore him. When I was pregnant they day dreamed of what he would be, what we would call him & what they would do for him. The boy kissed my stomach every day bf school & once the baby was born, started saying, "goodbye, I'll see you in 6 hours" when I'd drop him off. They entertain him, cuddle him, they make him laugh & love nothing more than laughing at him. They were never jealous when he was born & they never got upset when he cried or took up most of our attention. The baby adores the bigs. He has a constant two man show, an endless supply of kisses & his eyes light up whenever he sees them. I'm just bidding my time till he gets on their nerves & all three are fighting but for now, they love to love him. I love it too.

It was chilly enough for a hat & cloudy enough for a quick picture this morning bf we left for school. This guy is my oldest. I love him dearly. He makes me crazy but really he is so great. He is your typical, not so typical 5 (almost 6) yr old. I expect a lot from him. I'm hard on him, I know I am. But I love him dearly so I make a point to tell him often how great he is & what a big help he is around the house. The other day he was getting a stern talking to the whole way to school. I was so frustrated w his attitude & wanted to make sure he knew it. Once we got to school I said to him, I love you. He waited. But? he said. There were lots of things I could have added in to really drive my point home but instead I said, That's it. No buts. I just love you, period. I have to remind myself he's only a little boy & little boys act like little boys. Man, there are days I just don't know what to do w him. More often there are days I don't know what I'd do without him.

Subtitled: They call soccer 'football' in Mexico...

The boy got this from a school gift exchange for Christmas & I really like it. It cost (maybe) 10 bucks. It isn't electronic or digital; it doesn't require any batteries & it keeps us entertained. Now normally I am not one to encourage smack talk. But today, as he rammed a plastic figure to score a winning point he shouted, 'How do ya like THESE quesadillas!' Hmm...

Today was all abt saying good bye to Christmas break, taking down decorations, cleaning & rearranging. Letting the kids choose their own clothes, IE pajamas, having a big, home made late lunch & then at one point, busting out the hammock so the kids could swing. He kept calling this a 'hamrock'.
